Are you ready for a real American Freestyle Bullfight?

What’s American Freestyle Bullfighting? Austin is about to find out.

Professional bullfighter Dusty Tuckness, of Meeteetse, Wyo., is tossed in the air by bull Kid Twist as rider Wesley Silcox, of Santaquin, Utah, scrambles for safety during the third go-round bull riding event at the Wrangler national finals rodeo in Las Vegas. Contributed by Brian Jones

Forget the capes and swords of the Spanish tradition. This extreme sport is not unlike what rodeo bullfighters do in the ring to protect bull riders — and everyone else.

On Oct. 28, Rodeo Austin will present a new event, Bulltoberfest, which will combine beer, food trucks, live music and a festival atmophere.

I’m in already. Twelve bullfighters will face off with tough bulls in a bracket-style tournament to win $25,000. It will take place on the Rodeo Austin grounds near the Texas Expo Center.

Tickets go on sale Sept. 15.

This addition to the fall entertainment calendar is part of Rodeo Austin’s long-range plan to be a year-round attraction, along with hopes of completely redeveloping the entirely inadequate Expo Center.
